Walmart Testing Scheduling Visibility
Walmart is piloting a program that will allow its associates to view available shifts across all departments throughout the stores in which they work and give them the opportunity to work any of those shifts.
Walmart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said, “Walmart has created a program to provide associates greater visibility into available shifts across their store, giving them the ability to choose more hours for themselves and expand their career path. We are excited about our plans to bring this program to our associates over the next few months.”
An online version of the schedule is available where employees can use their computers, tablets, or smartphones to view and make a request to work certain shifts. This is presently in the test phase and associates are encouraged to provide feedback so the company can understand and improve on how associates want to receive the scheduling information. The shifts are also posted in the back of the store.
The program benefits the employees by giving them opportunities to earn extra money as well as training within and learning about other departments to advance their careers. According to the company more than 75% of store management teams started as hourly associates.
If the technology is successful it could open up an entirely new method for Walmart to communicate and interact with employees. The program is currently in the test phase at two stores with the intent to roll out to more stores in July and then out to all company stores by the end of October.
