Birchbox Heads North
Birchbox, a leading beauty company for women and men, launched in Canada this week. Birchbox’s unique business model allows subscribers the chance to experience a product before committing to a full-size purchase. For $15 a month (including shipping and taxes), each Birchbox contains a personalized selection of five luxury beauty samples for hair, makeup, nails, skincare, and body. All products are specially selected by Birchbox staff. After testing the samples, customers can shop the company’s website for 50 beauty brands with over 600 full-sized products.
Birchbox Co-Founder and Co-CEO Katia Beauchamp said the expansion is overdue as the company has “had tens of thousands of customer inquiries regarding shipping to Canada.” Canadian consumers will now have the opportunity to try, learn about and buy premium beauty products previously unavailable in the country. The international growth will also allow Canadian beauty brands to expand both nationwide and internationally giving existing customers the opportunity to experience products not previously available.
This marks the sixth country the company has expanded to since launching in the U.S. in September 2010. Headquartered in New York City, Birchbox also operates in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Belgium, and now Canada. Birchbox maintains a blog and online magazine where subscribers can learn how to make the most out of their personalized assortment of beauty products.
Experiencing rapid growth from the beginning, the beauty subscription service launched Birchbox Man in April 2012. At the beginning of this year, the company had shipped more than 9 million boxes to subscribers. In July 2014, Birchbox opened their first brick and mortar store in New York City, featuring full-sized products, hair, makeup, and nail services and a Build-Your-Own-Birchbox (BYOB) section. Birchbox currently has more than 800,000 subscribers and is valued at half a billion dollars.
